Wow,When reading about the head injury from a gunshot...it was exactly how my great-grandfather George Heath mentioned it to his children and grandchildren. He always talked about having 3 family members that served in the War. He knew the one that suffered from the gunshot to the head. My uncle Lynn couldn't remember how that member fit into the family. George Heath would have been 15 years old when Silas Shay died. I am pretty sure that Silas Shay was a brother to James Shay and uncle to Jane & Nancy. This is all starting to tie together.

Feb 28 1872 affidavit of Silas Shay - resident of Alma in Allegany Cty - Discharged in Alexander VA in 10/1862 Currently 32 yrs. Battle Cedar Mountain Aug 9 1862 received gunshot wound - the ball entering the had about one half inch forward of the lower part of the left ear passing through the head and coming out about 1 inch forward of the center of the right ear that his jaw bone is .. injured so much so that he can open his mouth only about one-half inch is painful when eating and taking much time in eating and preparing the food suitable to insert into his mouth.
The injury effects his head and his hearing and produces a dissiness in the head and in attempting to work in the sun he is majorally affected that he unable to do but .. labour by reason of the wound.
By occupation is a farmer that he was treated in hospital in Alexandria Anapolas MD was sent back to Alexandra from Alexander Hospital to convalensant camp. He has resided since he left the service in ____ PA and in Allegany C NY. That he hereby appoints Lewis Foster of Wellsville as his attorney to prosecute his claim.
